Rock Salt is also known as Pink Salt and Himalayan Salt, and is called Kala Namak in Hindi. The variant used in Indian food is a blackish salt that is is salty and pungent, with its smell mainly due to its sulfur content. It is mined in the Bangladesh, India, Pakistan and Nepal in certain locations of the Himalayas salt ranges. It is commonly used in cooking, in place of other table salt, and also used in Indian “chaat masala”. It is added to chutneys, fruits salads, raitas, freshly cut salad vegetables, chaats, dahi wadas, and a variety of Indian snack foods. It is known for its sulphurous sour flavour and its unique pinkish or purplish hue.
