simple cumin breakfast peas
The perfect mildly spiced north Indian breakfast dish or afternoon snack with cumin and chills adding freshness to green peas.
200g fresh shelled green peas
1 tablespoon vegetable oil
½ teaspoon cumin
2 tablespoons finely chopped onion
2 green chilies, slit
½ teaspoon salt
2 tablespoons water
chopped coriander for garnish (optional)
- 1. Heat oil in a work or frying pan on medium heat. When hot, add cumin and allow to sizzle for 1 minute, stir and add onions. Allow onions to cook until they are transluscent and start turning golden on edges. Slit green chilies along center without breaking. Add to pan, add salt and stir.
- 2. Add peas, stir fry for 2 minutes, then add the water and cover. Allow to cook on medium heat for 5 minutes covered.
- 3. Uncover and let water dry.
- 4. Garnish with chopped coriander if desired. Serve with buttered toast.
However, if you are unable to get green chilies, you can add a quarter teaspoon of red chili powder. If you are using frozen peas instead of fresh, the process is the same. If you don’t have fresh coriander, your peas will still taste great!
